Paula Scher's Maps

Graphic Designer Paula Scher's new book Maps
covers her cartographic artwork from the late
1990's to present. She calls her large paintings
"distortions of reality" as they comment on the

way. When Scher started painting her maps she

of everyday life. Scher's colourful, multilayered
paintings present familiar geography in vibrant,

southwestern incense

I thought I would post this again as we have the
smokehouse incense burners on their way...
Incense burning is a tradition in many cultures,
however the fragrance of some incense can often
be too sweet or overpowering. This 100% natural
incense is made from native woods and produced
in New Mexico. The fragrances are distinctly dry
and woodsy, reminiscent of smouldering firewood.
The scents include pinon, juniper, cedar, hickory
and fir balsam. It's like having a campfire in your
house... (but without the flames) !!

It has been difficult keeping this mini cube wood
speaker in stock... every time we get them in they
fly out the door !! We ordered quite a few this time
so hopefully they will stick around for a while.
This little speaker on a keychain is easily portable
and produces rich sound. It includes a USB cord
for charging and a standard jack to connect it to
audio sources like media players and cell phones

occasionally every record store owner no matter
how knowledgable... gets schooled. this record
has rapidly become a favourite of mine since a
customer recommended it to me several years
ago. fruitlessly i searched for a copy and today
it has arrived ! we have 6 copies in the store.
also just in - mark hollis solo lp from the
following year ( which is also great ! )

Carved Wood Bird Clips

These cute wood bird clips are hand carved from
basswood and fitted with a brass clip instead of
feet. Each bird comes perched in a wood gift box
suitable for display. There are five different birds
available... we just got these in and we only have
a few left - they flew out the door (excuse the
pun) but we should be getting more in soon !!

wood handle corkscrew

yeah i know, it's a corkscrew, but when you need
one you need one, and this one is pretty sweet.
i think the handle is carved rosewood... and if
you're like me, the fall is the perfect time for
contemplation, reading, listening to records
and drinking red wine... everyone has their
favorite, mine is Masi Valpolicella Bonacosta
so there ya go

as much as i love all that summer has to offer
autumn is also a season that I truly adore ...
who doesn't love the rich fall colour palette
of burnt umber, ochre and raw sienna, the
return of boots to our wardrobes, walking on
a trail of crisp fallen leaves, or cuddling up in
a wool blanket, listening to a record on the
turntable while sipping a glass of red wine ...
but perhaps best of all is the new stock that
starts trickling in to the store at this time of
year... very exciting !!

Happy Labour Day

the chance to campaign for better pay or working
conditions. The day is now part of a long weekend
for most Canadians... enjoy !!

charles bradley: no time for dreaming

At 62 years of age charles bradley has released
his debut album after spending most of his life
working as a chef. if i had a time machine id go
back to the sixties and sign this guy !! I would
probably see a couple shows and pick up a few
good records too. maybe even in that order.
he is playing the biltmore tonight !!

buddha machines have arrived !!

If you don't know what these are they are kind of
hard to describe... but when Brian Eno discovered
them he went right out and bought eight. It's not
a digital audio player (at least not in the traditional
sense) it's barely even much of a device at all. The
FM3 Buddha Machine is just an audio out jack, a
pitch bender, an on off switch, and an integrated
speaker. Turn it on and it repetitively plays back
one of nine ambient loops. That's it, but somehow
the machine has captured the imaginations of
many with its deceptive simplicity. Alan Bishop
from Sun City Girls apparently has 24 of them,
no joke. come on in and check 'em out...
